We are a Christian charity, bringing together Christians from the mainstream Christian denominations in Britain to work together on areas of common interest.
Our main work is the SCHOOLS BIBLE PROJECT, through which pupils at secondary schools across Britain can study the New Testament and win awards and prizes for essays showing their knowledge and understanding of some of the great events of Christ’s life and mission.
Founded in the 1950s as a small Hampshire-based group of Christians who met to pray together under the name “Order of Christian Unity”, the charity was expanded in the 1970s. It moved to London and began to be involved with a range of projects including the publication of material on marriage, Christian-based sex education, and care for the gravely ill.
Education has always been a major aspect of the charity’s work, with major conferences held during the 1970s and 80s on Religious Education in schools.
The Schools Bible Project has now been running for over twenty years, and has become a popular part of Religious Education in a large number of schools.
We contact every secondary school in the country – comprehensive schools, grammar schools, independent schools – with our Bible Project materials in January, and schools work on these through the Easter and the summer terms. Essays are submitted to us by the end of June, winners announced at the start of the September term, and a prizegiving held in London in the Autumn.
Our 2011 Schools Bible Project winners went to the House of Lords in December 2011 to recieve their prizes from our Trustee, Baroness Cox. Look under our NEWS section for their names and schools.
